Walking challenges with friends that everyone can enjoy
Start with what would make another walk appealing to your friends. A good challenge might involve noticing something new, rather than walking further than everyone else.

Choose the kind of challenge before the target
Ask whether people want to explore, work together or compete. Agree a short time window and make it easy to join for only part of it. A weekend photo hunt and a daily step race ask very different things of people's schedules.
For a group, arrange the plan in your usual chat. You can keep results informal, with no ranking or requirement to share personal walking totals.
Six challenges to try
- The alphabet hunt. Choose a few letters and find a sign, object or place for each. Share only pictures you are comfortable sending.
- The unfamiliar turn. Each choose a public street or path you do not normally take. Check access and a route back, then describe one discovery.
- The shared destination. Draw a route on paper and add the distances people choose to contribute. Keep it cooperative and welcome different daily totals.
- The little-history walk. Each find one publicly available fact about a place on a route and tell the others when you meet there.
- The break-time outing. Choose two days to take a short walk or another activity that works for each person. Swap one observation afterwards.
- The agreed-day step-off. If you want competition, pick the day and rules together. Discuss whether ordinary work routines will make raw step totals feel fair.
Keep the rules easy to adjust
Someone may walk throughout a working shift while another person sits at a desk. Consider a shared route, a photo theme or chosen race days instead of assuming everyone starts with the same opportunities.
Make the activity adaptable to energy, access and changing plans. A seated observation challenge or a short indoor option can be part of a social activity, even though it is not the same as contributing walking distance to an app.
Pick a reward people would actually welcome
Try choosing the next picnic spot, sharing a favourite playlist or taking a group picture at the finish. If you want a forfeit, agree it beforehand and keep it small, kind and easy to decline.
Do not require a purchase to keep up with the group. If there is a cost, offer a free way to participate. You can also finish with a simple "That was fun, shall we do another?"
For two friends who want optional Mischief
We make Tandem Trails for two iPhone walkers sharing one virtual route. It is not a group leaderboard. Level it can compare step-offs against each person's own usual day, and optional Mischief adds cards earned through walking.
You can keep a Boost, hold a Shield for protection or play a Rematch. Cards can change a race, while your real steps and shared trail distance stay the same. See the two-person trail and optional Mischief, or use the offline challenge ideas with a larger group.
