A little further, together
The best walking apps for couples depend on what you want to share.
A shared finish line, a friendly leaderboard or a medal on the shelf? Start with what would make you both want to take another walk.

Choose the kind of challenge first
For two iPhone users who want their distances to add up on one route, Tandem Trails is our recommendation. For an iPhone-and-Android pair, look at Pacer's step challenges or World Walking's groups. If the reward you want is a physical medal, consider The Conqueror.
Our shortlist compares phone compatibility, how people take part together, rewards and costs. It is organised by use case, rather than a universal score: the best choice needs to work for both people.
| App | Consider it for | Phones | Cost to check |

Tandem Trails: two iphone walkers sharing one trail
Your walking distances add up on one shared trail. You can race on chosen days, compare steps against your own usual day, and leave painted stones for your partner to discover.
Before you choose: Both walkers need an iPhone. Rewards are digital keepsakes; we do not send physical medals.
Pacer: step leaderboards across different phones
Pacer offers step challenges with invite links and a shared leaderboard. It supports iPhone and Android, making it an option when you use different phones.
Before you choose: Check which challenge features and wearable connections are included before inviting your partner.
World Walking: virtual routes with a group
World Walking offers virtual routes, milestones and group chat. Basic users can join an existing group; creating your own group requires a Plus account.
Before you choose: Use the current worldwalking.com service. The old worldwalking.org service closed in May 2026.
Walk the Distance: following long-distance hiking trails
Walk the Distance puts everyday distance on iconic hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail. Its official site lists Apple Health, Samsung Health, Fitbit and Garmin connections.
Before you choose: Check current purchases and compatibility. Seeing other walkers on a route does not necessarily mean combining your distances into one total.
The Conqueror: virtual journeys with physical medals
The Conqueror combines virtual routes, in-app content and physical finish medals. It accepts multiple activity types, with tracker connections or manual entry.
Before you choose: Compare the full challenge cost and delivery terms. It is a stronger fit if a medal in the post is part of the appeal.

What if one of you walks much more?
Agree whether you want to combine distances or compete before starting. A shared distance goal gives every walk a contribution. A raw-step leaderboard may suit people with similar routines, but it can feel lopsided if one person spends the working day on their feet.
Tandem Trails offers Level it, which compares your steps against your own usual day. You can also choose race days that fit your week rather than making every day a competition.
Can a walking app work for a long-distance couple?
Yes, if the app lets you share progress without being in the same place. You can walk separately and check in later. Before choosing, check phone support, what information you share, and whether the app combines your distance or simply shows separate totals.
