Questions to ask friends on a walk

Choose one question you would like to answer too. Follow the interesting detail, rather than trying to work through the whole list before you get home.

So, what's new?

Let it be a conversation, not an interview

Ask a question, share your own answer and leave room for a pause. "What got you interested in that?" can be a better next step than another prompt. Either person can keep it light, change the topic or enjoy a quiet part of the walk.

These are original conversation ideas. They are not a friendship test, and your friend does not owe you an answer to anything private. If something needs a quieter setting, save it for another time.

For the ordinary things you might have missed

  1. What have you been enjoying lately that I have not heard about?
  2. Which small part of your week would you happily repeat?
  3. Have you discovered somewhere nearby you would recommend?
  4. What is a little task you are pleased to have finished?
  5. Is there something you would like more company for?

You might learn about a new interest, a comfortable routine or a practical way to spend time together. Let your friend choose how much detail to share.

For a memory you share

  1. What is the funniest small detail you remember from when we first met?
  2. Which of our old hangouts would you visit again?
  3. What is a song that takes you back to something we did?
  4. Which plan went completely differently from what we expected?
  5. What did we spend ages talking about that we have both moved on from?

Different memories can sit alongside each other. You do not need to agree on every detail to enjoy remembering the day.

For something new to do

  1. What would be a good free afternoon for you right now?
  2. Is there something you would like to try with a friend rather than alone?
  3. What is a small skill you would enjoy learning or teaching?
  4. Would you choose a busy place to explore or somewhere quiet to sit?
  5. Which idea shall we actually put in the calendar?

If an idea turns into a plan, check the time, cost and access details together. An enthusiastic answer does not have to become a commitment on the spot.

For friends who live apart

  1. What would you show me first if I visited your neighbourhood?
  2. What is an ordinary part of your new routine I might not picture accurately?
  3. Have you found a place that reminds you of somewhere we used to go?
  4. What kind of update do you most enjoy receiving from me?
  5. What would make our next catch-up easy to arrange?

These can travel in a voice note after separate walks. For more ways to share an ordinary day, try our long-distance friendship ideas.
